Cole Weston, a renowned photographer who maintained the legacy of his father's photographic work, has died in Monterey. Weston, who died Sunday, was 84 and had been in failing health for some time. He spent much of his career as an assistant to his father, photographer Edward Weston, then as his master printer and executor of his estate.
"He will be remembered as the person responsible for maintaining the legacy and extending the influence of Edward's work," said Robert Sobieszek, head photo curator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Cole Weston worked a variety of odd jobs, including a stint at Lockheed Aircraft, before becoming a photographer himself. During World War II he joined the Navy, where he did public relations work before taking a job as a Life magazine photographer. Around 1948, Eastman Kodak started sending color film to Edward Weston, who didn't use it because of failing health. Instead, Cole Weston began experimenting with color and eventually became one of the world's masters at color photography.
Cole Weston, who married and divorced four times, continued to publish and teach until his death. He's survived by four sons, two daughters and nine grandchildren. A fifth son died in 1971. He was the fourth of Edward Weston's four sons, and the last to die.

If you want great images with digital you have to learn not only everything you need to know in regular photography, but you also have to learn all about pixels, image and file resolutions, color sync, color profiling, monitor calibrations, color spaces, file formats, bit depths, resampling algorithms and a ton of other technical gobbledygook.
Digital cameras are pushed in camera stores and magazines simply because they make a lot of money for the people who want to sell them to you. You can get a much better film camera for the same price.

De Prijs voor Nieuwsbladfotografie van de landelijke organisatie van lokale nieuwsmedia (NNP) is gewonnen door Arie de Viet, fotograaf van De Eendrachtbode, voor zijn foto van een taxatiedag van oude boeken. Hoewel de foto volgens de jury geen grote nieuwswaarde heeft, is hij ,,juist prachtig door de uitstraling van tijdloosheid''.

In het kader van het jubileumjaar van Nieuwe Revu wordt tijdens het fotofestival Naarden veel ruimte voor typische Nieuwe Revu-foto's gemaakt. Vijftig fotografen die werken of werkten voor het tijdschrift, sturen hun mooiste, ontroerendste foto in. Die foto's zijn tijdens het festival te zien. Ook verschijnt er een boek over de fotografie in Nieuwe Revu.

Nu is de naam bekend gemaakt door Prof. Bill Gaines die samen met studenten van de University of Illinois 4 jaar onderzoek deed naar deze bron. Het gaat om Fred Fielding, al tientallen jaren een van de meest gerespecteerde leden van de Amerikaanse Republikeinse Partij, en nog steeds in een hoge positie aanwezig in de regering Bush.

Twee grote bedrijven in de fotografie-wereld hebben vandaag hun financiële resultaten bekend gemaakt. Getty Images boekte een recordwinst over het eerste kwartaal (een verdrievoudiging ten opzichte van vorig jaar), terwijl de resultaten van Kodak verder inzakten, niet alleen door opkomst van de digitale fotografie maar vooral door de voortdurende economische crisis en het inzakkende toerisme onder dreiging van terrorisme en ziekten als SARS.

Vanmiddag wordt in het WAK - het fotografiemuseum van Zierikzee - de tentoonstelling Publieke Doelen geopend.
Fotograaf Jack van Bommel trok de afgelopen vijf jaar door Nederland en legde op speelplaatsen, pleinen en landjes de openbare sport- en spelfaciliteiten vast. Met dien verstande dat hij zijn onderwerp inperkte tot uitsluitend de vast opgestelde doelen.
De tentoonstelling bestaat uit honderdvijftig foto’s van openbare doelpalen. Het bijbehorende fotoboek is tijdelijk te verkrijgen voor de actie-prijs van 135 euro.

Een Iraanse journalist is gearresteerd vanwege de inhoud van zijn weblog. Sina Motallebi, maker van Rooznegar, werd twee weken geleden opgepakt door de autoriteiten. Hij was een van de Iraanse webloggers die niet onder een bijnaam op internet publiceerde. De arrestatie werd afgelopen weekend als eerste gemeld door de Iraanse weblog Hoder.com. Op die site staat ook een foto van de gevangen genomen journalist.
Verontwaardigde internetters zijn inmiddels een petitie begonnen om de Iraanse president Khatami te bewegen door Sina vrij te laten.
De afgelopen twee jaar zijn in Iran meer dan negentig pro-democratische publicaties verboden. Tientallen journalisten zijn op basis van vage beschuldigingen gevangen gezet. My days spent aboard the an aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf as a "media embed" were unforgettable. One of the challenges I faced as an "embed" was to ensure that I was not "in bed" with these people I came to admire and/or the military. At times, the challenge felt insurmountable.
We were, after all, seeing only half the picture. I could photograph a bomb being assembled, follow the pilots through their briefings, show the crew members lifting the bomb onto a wing and then the ballet of planes navigating to their takeoff positions on the 4.5 acre deck. I even managed to get a camera mounted inside a cockpit for a view of the pilot. What I could never do was document where that bomb would fall and the full effect of each sortie.
There were no empty seats for me to tag along. I felt very frustrated as a journalist, but I understood that I was documenting a small, but significant, part of the larger puzzle. My main concern was that I was producing images that were glorifying war too much. These machines of war are awesome and make for stunning images. I was afraid that I was being drawn into producing a public-relations essay.
Was I focusing too much on the incredible sacrifices these sailors and aviators make in their personal lives -- and losing sight of the horrid effects of their efforts on the distant ground? Was I missing the bigger picture? Ultimately, after a week and a half of photographing endless waves of aircraft soaring into the sunset skies, I decided my time would be best spent focusing on life beneath the deck. I could only photograph what I could see -- and I thought that the people, not the planes, were the story I could adequately portray.
Access proved challenging, but the people I met made the effort worthwhile. My last week ended as I went to the "mess" to get a plate of food and heard singing in the dishwashing room. Half a dozen cooks were killing time by singing into their broom handles. I think it's a very telling moment that demonstrates just how isolated you are from the real world, not to mention the horrors of war, on a nuclear aircraft carrier.

Er is geen centimetertje naakt te zien, maar toch is het Vaticaan zwaar verbolgen om een pin up-kalender met priesters. De Calendario Romano 2004 toont per maand een jonge, knappe priester, in priestergewaad poserend voor een kerk. De kalenders zijn te koop in de buurt van het Vaticaan en waren meteen een groot succes.
De fotograaf die de kalender maakte, begrijpt de boze reacties van het Vaticaan niet. ,,Ja, ik weet dat die priesters er niet slecht uitzien, maar wat is daar verkeerd aan? Als ik een kattenkalender zou maken, zou ik er toch ook geen scharminkels op zetten?''
Het Vaticaan kan er niet om lachen.

The Afghan authorities said they had arrested five men on suspicion of murdering four foreign journalists in southeastern Afghanistan in November 2001. Amrullah Salahi, a senior official of the national intelligence agency, said the men had confessed to the killings. State-run Radio Kabul said the suspects were supporters of the former Taliban government and of Osama bin Laden's network, Al Qaeda. Mr. Salahi said one had been arrested several months ago, leading to the arrest of the others. "Because of security issues involved, we could not reveal the arrest of the first person," he said.
Two Reuters journalists, Harry Burton, a cameraman from Australia, and Azizullah Haidari, an Afghan photographer, both 33, were killed Nov. 19, 2001, by unidentified gunmen at Tangi Abrishum, about 55 miles east of the capital, Kabul, on the road from Pakistan. A Spanish journalist, Julio Fuentes, of El Mundo and an Italian journalist, Maria Grazia Il Cutuli, of Corriere della Sera, were also killed in the attack.

Van 18 april tot 15 juni 2003 is in het Brusselse Paleis voor Schone Kunsten (of BOZAR zoals de nieuwe roepnaam luidt), een overzichtstentoonstelling te zien van het werk van de bekende Zuid-Afrikaanse documentaire fotograaf David Goldblatt.
De reizende tentoonstelling omvat een tweehonderdtal zwart-witfoto's, gemaakt tussen 1948 en 1999, vanaf de invoering van de apartheid tot de opheffing ervan en de overgang naar een democratisch bestel. Speciaal ter gelegenheid van de presentatie in Brussel wordt het geheel aangevuld met een nieuwe reeks van 35 kleurenbeelden, die Goldblatt in Johannesburg maakte in opdracht van 'Documenta 11'.

Royal photographer Lord Lichfield caused controversy yesterday by branding Princess Diana "an extremely skilled manipulator with not a particularly high IQ". The Queen's cousin said: "Diana was a round peg in a square hole. She must have been madly irritating from the moment she understood the power of publicity".
The photographer made his comments in a magazine interview to promote a new exhibition of his work at the National Portrait Gallery in London, which includes shots from the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana.
The Earl added: "As I grow older, I realise the fragility of things that seemed so perfect at the time. It's so sad." Diana's supporters were shocked he would risk upsetting Princes William and Harry by publicly criticising their mum. A source close to her brother, Earl Spencer, said: "These kind of comments are not helpful."

Lior Ziv
Today a Palestinian sniper opened fire on Israeli troops performing a raid into Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. He killed army photographer Lior Ziv (19) who was documenting the raid, and wounded two other soldiers.
In the Eilon High School in Holon, Ziv studied photography and art and displayed his photographs at school exhibitions. The camera was also an integral part of his social life: He documented his friends and the parties and events he helped organize.
Ziv was admitted to the IDF Spokesman's filming and photography unit after strict entrance exams. The unit consists of 30 people, mostly video photographers and a few stills photographers. Ziv did not tell his mother that he had undergone combat training because he did not want to worry her. On Saturday he called to tell her he was on his way to photograph something in Be'er Sheva.
On Passover eve his grandmother asked him if he was doing anything dangerous. "No way," he said. "I'm a jobnik [paper pusher] in the Kirya." His father, the CEO of Carmel Mizrahi, was the only one who knew. The operation in Rafah was Ziv's first complex mission. He asked to be on a team with his two more experienced friends, a video photographer and sound man. The video photographer was badly wounded in the leg; the sound man, who was hit by shrapnel, attended the funeral.

Een opvallend voordeel van deze technologie is dat bij een belpiek het systeem niet overbelast raakt, in tegenstelling tot een gsm-mast. Immers hoe meer bellers, hoe meer informatie er doorgegeven kan worden door de mesh-netmobieltjes.

De afgelopen week werd bekend dat fotograaf Jan Banning onder de naam Ipso Facto een uitgeverij heeft opgericht voor het uitbrengen van zijn eigen boek "Sporen van oorlog" en in de toekomst ook andermans boeken.
Slordig alleen, dat er al lang een uitgeverij van fotografie-boeken onder de naam Ipso Facto bestaat, die onder meer boeken van Fred Aufray, Marc Rivière en het complete werk van Jean-Francois Jonvelle op de markt brengt. Deze Amerikaanse uitgeverij, die ook in Europa zeer actief is, zal ongetwijfeld bezwaar maken tegen deze inbreuk op het merkenrecht: een (paas-)eitje voor hun advocaten.
